Maldives or Seychelles: Which Is Right for Your Luxury Holiday?
Two Indian Ocean icons, and an honest guide to choosing between them.
Maldives or Seychelles is one of the loveliest decisions in luxury travel, and one of the hardest, because both are genuinely extraordinary. They are often spoken of in the same breath, two Indian Ocean idylls of white sand and impossible blue, yet they offer quite different holidays. Choose the wrong one for how you actually like to travel and you will still have a beautiful time. Choose the right one and it will feel as though the place was made for you.
After years of planning Indian Ocean escapes for couples and families, I have learned that the choice rarely comes down to which is more beautiful, they are both breathtaking, but to how you want to spend your days. Do you want the world reduced to the two of you and a stretch of water, or do you want beauty with a little more to explore? That single question usually decides it. Here is how the two compare, honestly, so you can find the one that is yours.
The short answer
If you want effortless, complete privacy and to do very little but swim, eat and rest, choose the Maldives. It is the most seamless switch-off there is: one resort to an island, an overwater villa, and nowhere to be. If you want dramatic beauty, a sense of place and the option to explore, walk, and move between islands, choose the Seychelles. It is wilder, more varied and feels more like somewhere. Neither is wrong. We simply match the destination to the holiday you want.
The Maldives: pure rest, on the water
The Maldives is privacy perfected. Each resort occupies its own island, so from the moment you arrive the world narrows to the two of you, warm water and a gentle daily rhythm. You step from your overwater villa straight into the lagoon, the house reef is yours before breakfast, and the days dissolve into swimming, spa treatments, long lunches and doing gloriously little. For travellers coming off a demanding year, or a wedding, that effortlessness is the entire point.
The trade-off is that a Maldives holiday is, by design, contained. You are on one island for the duration, so the resort you choose is almost the whole experience, its restaurants, its reef, its feel. That is why choosing the right island matters so much, and why we are candid about which villas genuinely sit over the water and which simply borrow the view. Our notes on the islands and suites we trust live in our guide to the luxury Maldives, and the finest overwater villas book out first, so it pays to plan early.
The Seychelles: wild, dramatic and full of character
Where the Maldives is serene and low-lying, the Seychelles is dramatic: granite boulders the size of houses, jungle-clad peaks falling to the sea, and beaches that genuinely look unreal in person. It feels like somewhere, with a sense of place the smooth resort experience of the Maldives does not aim for. And crucially, you can move: hop between Mahe, Praslin and the impossibly beautiful La Digue, walk to deserted coves, and explore reefs and nature reserves that teem with life.
That variety is the Seychelles' great strength. It suits the traveller who loves a beautiful beach but would be restless with a fortnight of stillness, who wants to swim and rest but also to see and do. There are real towns, local life and a Creole culture beyond the resort gates. Our guide to the luxury Seychelles sets out which islands suit which kind of trip, from barefoot seclusion to island-hopping adventure.
Which is better for a honeymoon?
Both are honeymoon royalty, and the right choice again comes down to temperament. The Maldives is the ultimate switch-off honeymoon: total privacy, an overwater villa, candlelit dinners on the sand and nothing to do but be together. If your idea of the perfect first week of marriage is doing absolutely nothing, beautifully, it is hard to beat. The Seychelles suits couples who want romance with a little more to it, morning walks to empty coves, a boat trip to a private beach, the sense of exploring somewhere together. We set both alongside the alternatives in our edit of the best luxury honeymoon destinations, and our wider honeymoon planning shapes either around you.
Which is better for families?
For families, the Seychelles often has the edge. Beaches you can walk to, more to see and do, larger island resorts and a genuine sense of place all suit travelling with children, particularly older ones who might tire of a single small island. That said, plenty of Maldives resorts are outstanding for families, with superb kids' clubs, shallow lagoons and family villas, and the one-island format can be wonderfully easy with younger children. The honest answer is that the right resort matters more than the destination, and our luxury family travel planning steers you to it either way.
When to go
Both destinations are loveliest from roughly December to April, when the skies are clearest, the sea is calmest and the light is at its best. The Seychelles is a genuine year-round destination, sitting outside the cyclone belt, with two gentle trade-wind seasons that shift which beaches are most sheltered rather than spoiling the holiday. The Maldives has a wetter southwest monsoon from around May to October, which brings some rain and wind but also lower prices and can still deliver beautiful days. We plan around your dates and, just as importantly, around which specific islands will be at their best when you travel. Entry requirements do change, so it is always worth checking the current FCDO foreign travel advice before you book.
Can you visit both?
You can, and a few travellers do, but the two do not sit especially close together, so combining them makes for a longer and more indulgent trip rather than an easy pairing. More often, we pair the Seychelles with Mauritius, its Indian Ocean neighbour, to balance the Seychelles' drama with Mauritius's variety, an idea we map out in our Mauritius and Seychelles itinerary. A night in Dubai also makes a natural stopover on the way to either. And for the couple torn between a beach and something more active, the classic answer is a safari and beach trip, pairing East Africa with the Indian Ocean.
Where to stay: the hotels we book
The resort is most of a Maldives or Seychelles holiday, so this is where the real choosing happens. In the Maldives, the islands we book most run from the barefoot brilliance of Soneva Fushi to the polished calm of the Waldorf Astoria, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Patina, and for couples set on a villa over the water, our guide to overwater villas in the Maldives is the place to start. In the Seychelles, we return again and again to Six Senses Zil Pasyon on its own private island, the two Four Seasons at Petite Anse and on Desroches, and the Waldorf Astoria. We are honest about which suits couples, which suits families, and which rooms genuinely have the view.
How we help you choose
The truth is that both the Maldives and the Seychelles will give you a beautiful holiday. Our job is to make sure it is the right beautiful holiday, matched to how you travel, and then to handle the pieces that turn a good trip into a seamless one: the island chosen for how you will actually use it, the villa with the view rather than the address, the private transfers and seaplane connections, the quiet upgrades that make the difference. The stays we trust most across the Indian Ocean are gathered in The Atlas Edit.
